During this time he would write in his free time or on his lunch hour with animals all around him. James would work 14-18 hour days and in the ten years of owning the practice, he only had three weeks of vacation total.

The work as a veterinarian who owned his own practice was really hard. He moved to Sacramento, California where he opened his own veterinary practice in the mid-1980s.

He would go on to the University of Missouri-Columbia where he graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. His family ended up moving from Chicago and he graduated from high school in Ballwin, Missouri. He has joked that his life was similar to that of the Brady Bunch. His father worked at Libby’s canning plant while his mother stayed home with his six siblings. James had a rather blue collar upbringing in Chicago, Illinois.
